BUSINESS & FINANCE
How I’d finance a mobile spray tan business if I were launching today
I put Spray Tan Arizona together for under four thousand dollars. Mobile spray tanning is a different kind of operation — no commercial space, no contractor. Here’s exactly what I spent and how I’d finance it today.

I put Spray Tan Arizona together for under four thousand dollars. That number shocks people. They hear “beauty business” and picture a salon lease, a build-out, a front desk. Mobile spray tanning is a different kind of operation. No commercial space, no contractor. My biggest single expense was a website.
The December 2025 Fed rate cut pushed small business loan rates to their lowest. If you’ve been considering a mobile organic spray tan business in Maricopa County, the financing climate is worth a close look. Rates are more favorable now than at any point in the past three years.
What I spent to get operational
Here’s exactly where the money went:
A full salon build-out in the Phoenix metro will cost $60,000–$145,000 before the first appointment. Mobile eliminates that entirely.
$2,800
Startup cost (no wrap)
$50
Arizona LLC filing
$161
Monthly loan payment
$0
Cosmetology license (AZ)
Why the SBA microloan is my first recommendation
I financed my launch out of savings, so I never went through the SBA process. But I’ve talked to dozens of beauty entrepreneurs since. The ones who used SBA microloans had the smoothest experience and the least stress over repayment.
SBA Microloan key details: Caps at $50,000 — average loan is about $13,000. A mobile spray tan setup won’t need anywhere near the cap. Most people I’ve spoken with borrowed $3,000–$8,000.
Current rates are 8%–13%. Repayment stretches up to six years. The loans come through nonprofit intermediary lenders — organizations that are more willing to approve a brand-new business than any bank would be. You’ll provide a personal guarantee and collateral, but the threshold is lower than you’d expect.
Several intermediary lenders require a brief business training workshop before approval. Two people I know said the workshop gave them a pricing and booking framework they still use today. It also makes a stronger impression on the lender than just submitting an application cold.
SBA microloan funds can cover equipment, inventory, marketing, and working capital. They will not cover commercial space purchases or existing debt payoff.
Equipment financing as an alternative
If the SBA process feels like too much paperwork, equipment loans are faster. The purchased gear serves as collateral, so approval is simpler for a new business. Terms are less favorable:
Balboa Capital, Crest Capital, and National Funding all write small equipment loans for beauty businesses. Some fund within the same week.
Heads up: An equipment loan covers your spray system and maybe your extraction tent. It won’t cover insurance, marketing, or three months of solution inventory. I’d only recommend this if the equipment purchase is above $2,000 and you want to preserve cash for everything else. Below that amount, a credit card with a 0% introductory APR is simpler and has no origination fees.
Arizona’s licensing exemption
Spray tanning is exempt from cosmetology licensing in Arizona. No 1,500-hour cosmetology program required. That eliminates $10,000–$15,000 in tuition and nine months of school.
States that group spray tanning under their cosmetology boards won’t let you tan a client until you’ve finished the full program. Arizona has no such requirement.
Maricopa County itself didn’t require me to get a general business license. Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, and Gilbert each have a city license, but I paid under $75 for mine. My total regulatory expense was under $200.
What to put in your loan application
Lenders want a basic business plan. Not a 40-page document. They want evidence you’ve projected your revenue and expenses and the numbers are credible.
Per session
$45–$75
Clients per week
20
Monthly gross
$3,600–$6k
Overhead
Under $500
A $5,000 SBA microloan at 10% over three years costs about $161 per month. Five clients cover the payment. One busy afternoon.
How I’d allocate the money today
If I were filing a microloan application in Maricopa County tomorrow, I’d request $5,000–$10,000. A quality HVLP system, six months of organic solution inventory, a professional website with integrated booking, and a month of paid advertising. That combination fills your calendar fastest, which is what the lender wants to see in your projections.
